INTRO
A LAND SHAPED BY MANY HANDS
Croatia may appear small on the map, but its story is anything but.
Set at the meeting point of Central Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Balkans, this land has long stood where worlds overlap. Over centuries, different empires, kingdoms, and cultures have left their mark here, from the Romans and Byzantines to Venice, the Habsburgs, and beyond.
Rather than a single, continuous rule, Croatia’s history is a layered one. Istrian coastal towns reflect centuries of Venetian influence, Liburnian and inland regions carry the imprint of Central European traditions, while other areas were shaped by the presence of the Ottoman frontier. These influences did not simply replace one another – they coexisted, overlapped, and gradually blended into something unique.
The result is a country of remarkable diversity within a relatively small space: in architecture, language, customs, and ways of life.
For much of its history, Croatia existed within larger political systems. This brought both challenges and advantages – exposure to ideas, trade, and cultural exchange, alongside the constant need to adapt and preserve a sense of identity.
Only in more recent history has Croatia begun shaping its path as an independent state. Like many young nations, it is still in the process of defining itself by learning, evolving, and gradually finding its own voice.
What you will experience on this journey is not just a landscape, but the outcome of centuries of competing powers, multi-cultural influences, and resilience.
THE MOUNTAIN WORLD OF CROATIA
In terms of sheer height, Croatia’s mountains may not rival the highest ranges of Europe. But in terms of diversity, within such a small area, they are among the most fascinating.
This journey is an invitation to discover a lesser-known side of the country: its mountain landscapes, still relatively untouched and unfamiliar to many international visitors.
Here, within a short distance, landscapes shift dramatically from coastal ridges above the Adriatic to deep forests, karst formations, and remote highlands shaped by the harsh elements.
At the heart of this world lies Velebit, the longest mountain range in Croatia and one of its most defining natural features. More than just a geographical barrier, Velebit has long shaped life, climate, and human movement between coast and inland.
For hikers and nature lovers, it offers something increasingly rare: space, silence, and a sense of discovery.
UNESCO PROTECTION
The entire Velebit mountain range in Croatia is protected by UNESCO as part of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, designated as a Biosphere Reserve in 1978. It is Croatia’s largest protected area, covering an area of roughly 700–770 square miles, and is recognized for its immense biodiversity, karst landscapes, and numerous endemic species.
Key Details About Protected Velebit:
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: Designated in 1978, the reserve includes the entire mountain range and focuses on balancing biodiversity conservation with sustainable human use.
National Parks: The Velebit Nature Park encompasses two national parks: Northern Velebit and Paklenica.
Unique Biodiversity: It is home to many endemic species, such as the Velebit degenia, and features significant wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, and lynx.
Cultural Significance: The area includes historical sites, such as the Premužić Trail built in the 1930s, which is protected as cultural heritage.
Protection Structure: The area is divided into a strict core area (national parks and nature reserves like Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi) and a buffer zone to manage sustainable development.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO PREPARE, NAVIGATE, AND FULLY ENJOY YOUR SELF-GUIDED EXPERIENCE
BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
This self-guided journey is designed to give you both freedom and security on the trail. You will have all the tools needed to navigate confidently, while still leaving space for your own pace and exploration.
Before You Travel
To ensure a smooth experience, please prepare your navigation tools in advance:
- You will receive a GPX track for each day of hiking
- Please upload these tracks to your phone before arrival
I recommend the following apps:
- Android users – install Locus Map
- A subscription is recommended for the best experience (low monthly cost)
- iPhone users – install Mapy.cz
- A subscription is recommended for the best experience (low monthly cost)
Before leaving home, ideally while connected to Wi-Fi, please:
- Download offline maps of Croatia within the app
- This ensures full navigation even in areas without mobile signal.
WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR THE TRAIL?
Conditions on Velebit can vary throughout the day, so layering is essential.
Weather Expectations
In June, you can expect:
- Daytime temperatures: 20–30°C
- Evenings and nights: can drop close to 0°C in exposed areas
Clothing (Layering System)
I recommend bringing:
- Several lightweight hiking T-shirts (for changing during the day)
- A mid-layer (fleece/softshell)
- A windproof/waterproof jacket with hood
- Hiking pants
- Light rain/wind overpants
On the Trail (Important Tip)
You will sweat during hiking – whether it’s sunny or rainy.
- Always carry at least one or two dry T-shirts in your backpack
- During breaks, change into a dry shirt and add a layer
- This helps you stay warm and avoid chills when you stop moving
Once you start walking again, you can adjust your layers.
A dry shirt during rest stops makes a big difference in comfort.
Footwear
Bring well-tested hiking boots that you are already comfortable in.
Do not use new boots on this trip.
Terrain on Velebit is:
- rocky and uneven
- limestone (can be slippery)
- a mix of stone, grass, and dirt
I strongly recommend:
- sturdy hiking boots with ankle support
Mountain Hut Essentials
For overnight stays in mountain huts:
- Sleeping bag or bag liner (mandatory and required for hygiene)
- (Optional) pillowcase
- (Optional) light inflatable travel pillow
Most huts provide:
- blankets
- pillows
However:
- beds are basic
- sheets are not provided
A sleeping bag liner is essential and mandatory for hygiene and comfort.
Additional Essentials
A few extra items can make your experience more comfortable and enjoyable:
- Swimwear
(for optional swims along the way or during transfers) - Sun protection
- SPF 50 sunscreen
- hat or cap
- sunglasses
- Music (optional)
If you enjoy listening while walking, download your playlists in advance (Spotify, Tidal, etc.), as there is no mobile signal in many areas - Light personal items
Keep everything minimal and practical

ON ARRIVAL
We will go through everything together to make sure you are fully prepared:
- GPX tracks correctly loaded
- Maps downloaded and working offline
- App functioning properly
You will not be left to figure this out on your own.
WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE
During your trip, you will be equipped with:
- GPX tracks
- Printed daily maps with clear route markings
- Turn-by-turn notes highlighting key points:
-
- where to continue straight
- where to turn
- optional detours and points of interest
- Written descriptions of each day’s route
- Portable phone chargers (power banks).
ON THE TRAIL
The routes are generally straightforward and easy to follow.
However, the additional notes are there to:
- give you confidence at key junctions
- highlight interesting places along the way
- allow you to explore optional stops if you wish
You can follow the route strictly or take your time and adapt it to your own rhythm.
UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION
Each route is carefully checked before the season begins.
Natural conditions can change trails due to weather, vegetation, or forestry work, so all routes and notes will be:
- personally reviewed by me and updated during May and June
- finalised and ready before your arrival
This ensures you are walking on the most accurate and current version of the route.
HOW DO I DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS?
Please do this before traveling, while connected to home Wi-Fi. Offline maps are essential, as some parts of the route may have weak or no mobile signal.
For Android: Locus Map
- Install Locus Map from the Google Play Store.
- Open the app and allow the basic permissions it needs for navigation.
- Go to Menu – Map Manager – Offline.
- Tap the download / plus option to download maps.
- This opens the Locus Store, where offline LoMaps are available.
- Search for Croatia or browse to the relevant region and select the map you need.
- Log in if the app asks you to do so before downloading.
- Download the map and wait until it finishes completely.
- After download, make sure the map appears in the Offline tab of the Map Manager.
- Open the map once to confirm it works. Official Locus guidance says downloaded maps appear in the Offline tab, and offline LoMaps can be downloaded through the Locus Store from the Map Manager. The first three LoMaps are available free; additional access depends on the plan or purchases.
Recommended
A paid Locus subscription is recommended for the best experience, but it is not strictly necessary just to load an offline map and follow a GPX track. With Locus, the first three LoMaps are free, while broader access is tied to Premium Gold or additional purchases.
For iPhone: Mapy.cz / Mapy.com
- Install Mapy.cz on your iPhone.
- Create or log in to your account in the app. Offline map downloads require you to be logged in.
- Open the app and go to the offline maps section.
- Search for Croatia.
- Download the country map and wait until the download is complete.
- Open the map once after downloading to make sure it is available on your phone.
- Test it by temporarily switching off mobile data and confirming the map still works. Mapy’s official help says offline maps are available in the mobile app after logging in, and in the free version you can download one country, while Premium allows unlimited offline maps.
Important
If you already use the free version and have another country downloaded offline, you may need to remove that one first or upgrade to Premium. Mapy’s help states that the free version allows only one country offline, while Premium removes that limit.
Final Check Before Departure
Before leaving for Croatia, please make sure that:
- the app is installed
- the offline map of Croatia is downloaded
- the map opens without internet connection
- the GPX track is loaded into the app
When you arrive, we will go through everything together and make sure it is all set up correctly.
HOW DO I LOAD THE GPX TRACK?
You will receive GPX files for each day of your hike. These files contain the exact route you should follow.
Please load them into your app before arrival, if possible.
For Android: Locus Map
- Make sure you have already installed and opened Locus Map
- Download the GPX file to your phone (from email, WhatsApp, or other source)
- Open Locus Map
- Go to Menu – Tracks & Routes
- Tap the Import button (usually a “+” or import icon)
- Navigate to your downloaded GPX file and select it
- Confirm the import
Once imported:
- The track will appear on your map
- You can tap it to view details
- Select “Navigate” or simply follow it visually on the map
Tip
Make sure the track is clearly visible (zoom in/out) and that your GPS location matches your position on the route.
For iPhone: Mapy.cz
- Make sure Mapy.cz is installed and you are logged in
- Download the GPX file to your phone
- Open the GPX file (usually from Files, Mail, or browser)
- Tap “Share” or “Open in…”
- Select Mapy.cz
The app will automatically:
- Import the route
- Display it on the map
Alternatively:
- Open Mapy.cz
- Go to My Maps / Saved items
- Choose Import GPX
- Select the file from your device
Before You Start Walking
Please check:
- The GPX track is visible on your map
- Your blue GPS dot is working and updating
- The track and your position align correctly
If anything is unclear, don’t worry.
We will check everything together before your first day on the trail.
WHAT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG?
Even though the routes are carefully planned and clearly marked, small uncertainties can happen. Here’s how to handle them calmly and confidently.
No Mobile Signal
This is normal in some areas.
- Your offline maps and GPX track will still work
- GPS location (your blue dot) works without internet
- Simply continue following the track on your screen
You Think You Took a Wrong Turn
Stop for a moment and check:
- Are you still on the GPX track?
- Is your blue dot aligned with the route?
If not:
- Go back to the last point where you were on the track
- Rejoin the route from there
No need to improvise or push forward blindly.
Battery Running Low
To avoid this:
- Start each day with a fully charged phone
- Use the power bank provided
If needed:
- Turn on airplane mode (GPS will still work)
- Lower screen brightness
- Close other apps
Bad Weather or Unexpected Changes
Conditions in nature can change:
- Trails may be affected by wind, rain, or forestry work
- If something feels unsafe or unclear, trust your judgment
You can always:
- Pause
- Turn back
- Take a safer or shorter option
You Feel Tired or Want to Shorten the Day
That’s completely fine.
This is your journey, it’s not a race.
- Take breaks
- Adjust your pace
- Skip optional sections.
TRAIL MARKINGS IN CROATIA
In addition to your GPX track, most hiking trails in Croatia are marked on the ground.
The standard trail marking is:
- a white dot inside a red circle
These markings are placed along the route to guide hikers and are widely used across the country.
How to Use Them
While walking:
- Keep one eye on your GPS track
- And the other on trail markings around you
The two should always align.
This combination gives you the highest level of confidence on the trail.
Where to Look
Trail markings can appear in different places:
- on trees
- on rocks
- occasionally on branches or higher surfaces
They are not always at eye level – sometimes you may need to look slightly up or around to spot the next one.
If You Lose the Marking
If you walk for a while and don’t see the next marking:
- Stop
- Do not continue forward blindly
- Return to the last marking you clearly saw
- From there, carefully scan the surroundings and the direction of the path
Look ahead and around – the next marking is usually visible from the previous one, once you find the right line of sight.
Important
Trail markings are your backup navigation system.
Even if:
- your phone battery runs out
- your app stops working
…you can still safely follow the route using these markings.
SAFETY BASICS
The routes on this journey are accessible and well-planned, but you are still walking in a natural environment. A few simple habits will make your experience safer and more enjoyable.
Water
Please carry at least 3 liters of water per day.
Even though this is not peak summer, dehydration can happen faster than expected.
- Your backpacks will be light, as I transport your main luggage
- Carrying sufficient water is essential
Weather & Temperature
In the second half of June, conditions are generally pleasant, but not entirely predictable.
- Daytime temperatures can vary from 20–30°C
- Evenings and early mornings can be cool, occasionally dropping close to 0°C in higher or exposed areas
This means you should be prepared for both warm and cooler conditions within the same day.
A Simple Rule
Stay hydrated, stay aware, and don’t rush.
That alone prevents most problems on the trail.
FOOD & MEAL PLANNING
PRE-TRIP COORDINATION
In late June / early July, we will connect via:
- WhatsApp or
- Zoom call
to go through:
- your dietary preferences
- ingredients you eat or avoid
- meal expectations for each day
- any other question you might have
This step is essential to avoid any uncertainty during the trip.
What to Expect
Meals on this journey are a mix of:
- self-prepared meals (in mountain huts with shared kitchens)
- pre-arranged food supplies
- optional prepared meals provided by your guide
Options may include:
- stews
- soups
- simple cooked meals
- vegetarian dishes
Vegetarian & Special Diets
Vegetarian options are available, but:
- they are somewhat limited in remote mountain areas
For this reason, it is important that we:
- clearly define what is possible
- agree in advance on meal options
Important
Due to the nature of the terrain and access, simplicity and flexibility are part of the experience
I will do my best to accommodate your preferences, and clear communication in advance is the key.
DAY BY DAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 JULY 27 / ARRIVAL AT ZAVIŽAN
Pick-up in central Zagreb. Laura will confirm the hotel once the booking has been made.
Transfer to Northern Velebit National Park – approx 3 hr drive. Depending on your mood and energy levels, we will do either a shorter or longer hike with beautiful views in the area. Overnight stay at Zavižan mountain hut.
The hut does not offer cooked meals, but it has a fully equipped kitchen that we can use. I will provide ingredients for dinner and breakfast, and we will prepare the meals together. The goulash and some of the other ingredients will already be prepared in advance, so we will only need to cook the gnocchi, make the salad, and heat up the soup.
For dinner – Istrian goulash with gnocchi, ravioli, or pljukanci (traditional Istrian pasta), veal cutlets in gravy with mashed potatoes, salad with homegrown tomatoes, and soup. Other dishes are also possible, but we can arrange those via a WhatsApp call or by email, depending on what is seasonal, available, and feasible at the time. In any case, you can count on homemade and delicious cuisine.
I source ingredients in local stores, focusing on high-quality, locally produced food. Perishable items are either kept in a fridge in the van or purchased fresh along the way when needed, so everything remains safe and fresh throughout the trip.
Please note:
- Accommodation is in shared rooms (dormitory-style)
- Comfort is basic but functional
- There are no shower facilities
- Toilets are available and maintained, but in a simple mountain hut standard
The hut provides:
- shelter
- a place to rest
- a kitchen for meal preparation
- a unique atmosphere in the heart of the mountains.
Good to know:
- Wet wipes can be useful as there are no showers first two nights
- Sleeping bag or a sleeping bag liner (recommended for hygiene) is necessary.
DAY 2 JULY 28 / PREMUŽIĆ TRAIL pt.1
After breakfast, I will brief you on the route, provide instructions, descriptions, gpx tracks and photos of the day’s section of the trail.
You will then start hiking lightly and independently, while I drive ahead with the rest of your equipment and meet you at Alan mountain hut.
After arrival: rest, dinner, social time, and overnight at Alan. There’s a beautiful lookout nearby for sunset watch.
The hut provides meals (typically simple, hearty mountain food such as eggs, sausages, cabbage, potatoes, etc., with coffee and drinks available). If you have any dietary preferences, these can usually be arranged in advance.
